European Mobility Week 2024: Promoting Sustainable Urban Mobility Across Europe

Brussels, September 16, 2024 – The European Commission has officially launched the 23rd edition of the European Mobility Week its flagship campaign aimed at raising awareness and promoting sustainable urban mobility across Europe. Running from September 16 to 22, this year’s event will once again culminate in the much-anticipated Car-Free Day, which encourages cities to close off streets to vehicles, making space for pedestrians, cyclists, and public transport users. With the theme “Efficient, Active, and Green Mobility,” European Mobility Week 2024 is focused on encouraging behavioural change toward cleaner, smarter, and more sustainable transport solutions. The campaign invites cities, businesses, civil society organisations, and educational institutions to take part, promoting measures that support active mobility, such as walking and cycling, while also highlighting the importance of public transport and zero-emission vehicles.Throughout the week, participating towns and cities will showcase their commitment to improving urban mobility by trialing innovative planning measures, introducing new infrastructure and technologies, and assessing air quality. In many cities, local authorities will use the opportunity to gather public feedback on proposed projects, paving the way for long-term improvements in sustainable transport.

Car-Free Day and Mobility Actions

The Car-Free Day, scheduled for September 22, marks the peak of the week’s festivities. This popular event has seen increasing participation each year, as urban areas across Europe clear their roads of private cars, transforming them into hubs for walking, cycling, and public transit. Car-Free Day offers a glimpse into a future where urban spaces are designed with sustainability and liveability in mind. The European Mobility Week also encourages year-round participation through its Mobility Actions initiative, which calls on businesses, municipalities, and educational institutions to actively promote sustainable mobility solutions. Organisations are invited to register their initiatives, from encouraging employees to use public transport to introducing cycling incentives, and to share their success stories with the broader community.

Recognising Excellence: Mobility Awards

As part of the week, two prestigious awards will be granted. The European Mobility Week Award celebrates the local authorities that have made outstanding efforts in raising awareness about sustainable mobility during the campaign. The MOBILITYACTION Award recognises excellence in sustainable mobility management by businesses, civil society organisations, and educational institutions. With growing media attention and participation from cities across Europe and beyond, European Mobility Week continues to be a driving force in the shift towards greener, healthier, and more efficient urban transport systems.
